So a while back, it was repeated time and time again that the original files were nowhere to be found, but recent comments seem to indicate that JAW have all those models, renders, codes what-have-you to base their re-masterings on?

I think it was more a case of ‘in all likelihood’. As it turns out, we were pleasantly wrong.

I read about the proposed real time animated backgrounds for Abe HD being based on the 'original models'- were the backgrounds in AO/AE made in 3D because I thought they were just digital paintings?

Remember there are 3D transitions, for which there would be 3D models of background elements.
