hmm... i don't know about the whole cloning bit. If the Vykkers are scientists, they probably know that races of clones really aren't a good idea- check out "Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang" it's a good book on this subject.
If I had to guess, I would figure that Vykkers as we see them aren't at all what they look like naturally. Here's another book suggestion- "The Island of Dr. Moreau". Perhaps the old Vykkers take wild Vykkers, happy little purple creatures, and mutilate... I mean surgically augment them from birth. that would explain all the stitchwork.
