We need the environment the way it is to support us.

This is what I actually meant, yes - We need the environment to survive, and it's in our best interests to keep it as it is. This includes preserving the wildlife. If you push on one side of an ecosystem, you've no idea what'll happen in another part of it. We shouldn't protect the environment for the sake of "being green" and not harming it, we should protect it because we need it. And many people don't seem to realise that.

We haven't been industrializing the planet for millions of years. That's only been going on for the last 500 years at most and already we completely raped this world.

We're not the worst thing to happen to the planet by far, and it'll recover from any damage we'll do long after we've gone, so long as it remains habitable. To it, we've appeared and will probably disappear in a blink of an eye. It's the current environment that we've damaged.
