I wouldn't even say The Beatles were special for their time. People like Varèse had done things much more advanced than them only a decade before them, and even in the 19th century, people like Debussy* were doing things much more interesting. Then, at the same time as them, you had Zappa who was a classical musician under the guise of a crazy rock musican doing really brilliant stuff. I like and can appreciate The Beatles, but I refuse to accept them as more than just a successful pop band who dabbled lightly into slightly weird music.

*I understand this is a slightly radical comparison, but I have heard it argued that The Beatles made some minor musical advancements. They did not.
