Oddjob, my fascination with Zorn stretches back to seeing the Original Funny Games years ago. The sudden intrusion of the music coupled with the theme of the movie was almost exciting. That and the rest of his stuff is so random, especially the Naked City work, that I just can't stay away. The sudden changes and screeching halts keep me coming back.
It's definitely interesting music. Zorn has some very good ideas. I saw a video a while back in which he directed a contemporary jazz ensemble. It was a sort of rotating solos affair, and the group were creating some very dissonant and interesting noises. If I remember correctly, he conducted them with hand signals, so there was also a lot of room for him to spontaneously compose. I wish I could find it again, because it was a very good video.
