From what I understand Take Two purchased the original publishing rights to Duke Nukem for 12 million dollars at the time and later added 2 million in developing costs. That's 14 million dollars to be cleared before any profit at all can be made.

I've already seen stores where you can preorder the game for around 44 dollars or so, which would mean they'd have to sell at least 310.000 copies of the game to break even. For a game franchise this old, with most fans having moved on and current younger gamers not having a clue what Duke Nukem is, I don't think they are going to make that number in retail/legal sales. It's not a highly anticipated title like CoD, it won't have people sleeping infront of gamestores and the only thing game magazines have to say about is: "Hey guess what, DNF is actually being released. You can go get it if you still care."

I think Take Two is going to be having a party if they manage to break even. Judging the current situation they are merely doing damage control at the moment.
