Given how long he's had that idea, tried to do it and has been doing it, I'd say that's pretty standard for the industry. Getting a pet project out there can take as long as breaking into the industry in the first place.
He was one of the writers and animators for
Johnny Bravo,
Cow and Chicken and
Dexter's Laboratory before he made
Family Guy. He did pretty well, for a while he was the youngest executive producer in American television.
