Of course not, these only make things worse. The issues are:
-Why do they force people to update their clients when they only want to launch a game?
-Why are updates so big? Even with my 320KBPS connection a minor update to such a software shouldn't take that long. Something's probably wrong with their update mechanism.
Don't get me wrong, I think Steam's great, but it's the little things that get people annoyed.

You're complaining about update sizes on a digital download service where people regularly download 10, 20, even 30gb games. I understand your pain being stuck with a slow internet connection, but a service like Steam by its very nature is designed for faster connections.
