Ok here's what you do, it's simple but requires a certain amount of power:

When the nightmare begins, if you realise it's a nightmare, try and wake up, just try to open your eyes or keep telling yourself to wake up. If this fails your are going to have to try and stop whatever is scaring you so slow down, take a breath and try to turn your dream into something else, turn the scary bit into an action theme like a movie...try and give yourself some weapon and kill whatever it is attacking you. This can be done but sometimes your brain simply refuses to allow it and alters your thoughts subconsciously.

If you wake up terrified, turn on your bedside lamp and try to work out in a logical mind, what it was and why it happened, I know it's hard because sometimes I suffer from a random bouts of fear of darkness, apply logic to why you are having nightmares, are you stressed or have you been drinking? Put yourself into a happy place and just sleep again.

If it's really bad an you are a religious person, try saying a known prayer in your head over and over.

Hope this helps =)
