The fact that it spiraled so out of control and so far from what he originally intended was probably the final nail in the coffin for him (Note I said FINAL, I'm aware there were many other factors) which is why we haven't seen another game in so long.

If it had been the FINAL nail, the game wouldn't have progressed far enough to be announced. The FINAL nail was some unethical behaviour on the part of their publishers that caused him to be disillusioned about the games industry.
