Maybe when you're a fetus and need gestating. You're weak and need the protection. But as you get older your freedom becomes more and more valueable to you, leading to many people feeling trapped in their lives. That feeling of 'no way out'; that you'll be going insane staring at the surface in front of you until you are relieved by death is part of what claustrophbia is about, and the idea of going into a tiny, squishy space that shrinks in around you while you struggle in clinging fluid is something like claustrophobic x 1000.
Also, it just occurred to me that we have a thread for phobias and a thread for philias.
