Aura was pacing again when Jan finally woke up. That in itself spoke volumes about her current mental state – like all sligs she placed a great value on sleeping and he was normally always the first to wake up.
“What’s up, Aura?” he asked, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
“Dreamed,” she replied, tautly.
“Having a bad dream doesn’t usually worry you,” he propped himself up on an elbow.
She spared him a glance. “Wasn’ just a dream,” she said, softly. “Least… Frack, I dunno; I don’ think it was, anyway.”
“So… what was it?”
“Rej was there. I think… felt like a memory. All that bollocks he talked about before we left. About not bein’ able to see past the Red Plague…” She sank to her elbows. “Dammit, Jan, he did mention this damn fiasco, it’s what he was goin’ on about the whole time…!”
He swung his feet over the side of the mattress. “But-”
“The red plague,” she repeated, and whimpered. “That… that thing… it’s red! The one what’s been killing everyone, he’s red, Jan…!” She covered her head with her hands. “An’ Rej couldn’ see me past it because I won’ be there no more to see! Because he’s goin’ ter kill me!!”
“Hey… Aura, you’re jumping to conclusions…!”
She peered out from between her fingers. “Yer explain it then,” came the whimper.
“I…” he waved his hands about for a while, awkwardly. “Well…”
She whimpered, softly. "Jan, I don' like it. I don' like it here, it don' feel safe no more..." she crawled over to the mattress and tried to hide between it and the wall. "I want to go somewhere safe, Jan..."
