It might have, who knows. However I also think that OWI has always been an underdog developer. With gaming and consoles becoming a real hype around the time MO was made, I think a company that makes games about aliens and complicated puzzle gameplay and in depth stories wouldn't really have been competition to some of the huge games and developers that game out around the same time.
So even if MO did turn out the way OWI originally visioned it, it might not have become a hit after all simply because there were more interesting games on the market at the time. Hell, OWI played right into that trend with Stranger. People dig shooters, trying to produce another puzzle game would have sunk the company for sure. So yeah, I don't think it was the rushed finish of the game that made it sell bad, it was the mood of the market at that time.
