I can't comment on guns here, but responding the Havoc: Here in Australia there are strict laws about how you can practise self defence. You may think it strange, but you can't use any more force than you are threatened with. Thus, if you get attacked with a baseball bat, you can defend yourself with a similar weapon but not a knife. If you're threatened with a knife, you could use a baseball bat or a knife but not a gun. And if you injure the other party under such circumstances, you will be liable as if you had attacked them.

That said, when the judge comes to sentence you, the attacker's actions will be taken in to account and he'll probably be quite lenient.
