My high school didn't have a graduation ceremony. Too many students to have all their parents in the hall and call them up on stage one by one.
My university apparently did have mortarboards, but I was overseas when the ceremony was happening and didn't bother rescheduling for a later one. I clearly didn't know at the time about the sheer wonder of the headwear.
