If the original plan was to make 5 Quintology games, with Abe featuring as one of the main characters in each one

It wasn't. Abe was one of 5 heroes that would emerge throughout the quintology. They were each going to originally have their own moon also, but I recall Lorne being unsure of the wisdom of this decision; it may seem to consequential.
EDIT: I think the 5 moons were going to be kept and the idea that they were created as they became heroes (i.e. as Abe escaped Rupturefarms) was scrapped.
