Have you researched ship upgrades from
Miranda and Thane ?
If so, place a probe for reference and scan, say left to right, and rotate planet in opposite direction, can get all the way around pretty fast.
I start at one pole and work to the other. Still not fast but better.
Some planet descriptions (yeah who reads those) will give an idea of what is there.
For what it is worth I found a fair amount of element Z (hardest for me to locate) on planets with Moderate description
May be better ways but this worked for me.
