I have just received a large amount of money from having done my taxes, and would like to buy something cool. Somebody recommend some stuff.
Stikfa.

They're cheap, easy to assemble, great for kids or adults, have an excellent level of articulation (for doing poses and such), office friendly if you'd like to use them on your desk and come in a variety of delicious colors.

These guys cost 2.99 or 3.99 each. If you want to draw faces on them or shirts or boobs, they're paint friendly.
However: They can be fragile when you're first putting them together, the connecting balls have snapped off exactly three times for me (two on the blue guy, one on the other blue guy, not shown.)( Luckily they come with extra hips and shoulders and any limb part can be swapped out for a broken one. They're not super fragile, but just be careful.

Next: G.I. Joe/ Marvel Legends/Frankenstikfa

I totally understand if you have no interest in spending your money on GI Joe or Marvel Legends, but they're pretty cheap (probably cheaper for you) and worth taking a gander at at least once. If you can spare like Eight or Nine Dollars, check one of the Cobra Henchmen out, otherwise meh.
Marvel Legends and DC Universe figures are adequate. Maybe worth looking at if you want. Maybe.

Terminator: Salvation shit.

The T-101, Marcus and John Connor are all less then 5$, which is the only justifiable reason to get them. Again, I'm assuming you're either going to set these up in a pose or something around your house or at your office. They're cheap and have adequate articulation.

Here's a quality fucking image:

The Storm trooper, Darth Vader and Iron Monger all make good desk toys. Newer storm troopers can be posed better and blah blah blah. Worth looking at because they're cheap and are a conversation piece. If you're the type who laughs at hilarious situations in which Children's toys are doing something totally wacky and not what they usually do, storm troopers are good because EVERYBODY recognizes them. The Iron monger thing is just awesome. I suggest you buy it because of how awesome it is. It's also a quality toy, which helps. If you actually care about this one, make sure it's the "Opening Cockpit" one, with the brighter paintjob, because the other mold (with...power punching action) is supposed to be worse.
Better Iron Monger picture:

And now the only things you'll actually be interested in:

Big Daddy and Isaac Clark. What can be said that hasn't already been said? They're great, affordable, hefty, poseable and awesome, awesome awesome.

Oh, and here's some Tech Decks of Hunter S. Thompson and The Dude.

And finally: Minimates.

Basically giant Lego men with swappable limbs and a cutesy design. They're a collectors item and not bad if you can spare 5$. I need to get more.
