Chapter 6
Source Search (part 1)
Admeet and Zaypher reached the maintenance shaft entrance. It was a large steel door operated by an electrical crank shaft mechanism. Admeet pressed the orange, round button. Steam shot out of a few small vents in the mechanism. The crank turned and two locks slid down from the crank down into the floor. The door then slid against the wall to let the two Sligs through. The next room gave a pitch-black welcome to the Sligs. “Hmm, we’ll need a torch” said Admeet looking into the black. Zaypher walked over to a maintenance box attached to the wall next to the door. “There may be another problem” said Zaypher looking in the box, “This torch is low on power for some reason. And something has been biting it”. “Well, we’ll have to use what we can out of it” replied Admeet. Suddenly, something scuttled out of the gloom. It was glowing a bright green. “Hmm, that may be the culprit” said Admeet looking at it sniffing the slightly stale air, “an Electro Beetle”. Another beetle scuttled past the two Sligs; Admeet quickly grabbed it. “Keep that torch in handy as well. This bug might fail on us” said Admeet. The bug emitted a bright light and the duo entered the darkness.
The corridors were getting creepier by the moment. Zaypher kept the torch off to save power while the Electro Beetle did all the work. The duo then came to a to a large room with two large generators in the middle. Luckily, the room was lit by a central light above the generators. However, the edges of the room were not lit. “Judging by the generators, this must be the main power supply for the lab” said Zaypher, “This must be where we’d find a source”. Admeet started to scan the edges of the room with the beetle. Desks and computers surrounded the walls. Admeet walked over to one of the desks and inspected what was lying on it. “Hmm, more ammo for the pulse cutter” said Admeet. Zaypher walked to where Admeet was. “And look, a plug with a power adapter” said Zaypher. He looked at the two generators and saw they were not running. “I guess we have to turn on the generators to power the main supply. But I wonder what’s keeping that central light on” said Zaypher. Suddenly, the Beetle’s light started to fade away; Admeet noticed it. “Get under the central light, now” said Admeet looking worried. The room was getting darker by the moment. The two Sligs stood under the central light as the light from the beetle faded completely. “Well, now what do we do” said Zaypher. “Use the torch” replied Admeet. But before Zaypher could get the torch out, the Beetle made an ear-splitting scream. “Loud mouth” said Zaypher. Admeet drew the pulse cutter out and Zaypher picked up a crowbar sat next to him. First, it was silent, and then came a loud scream coming from all around the labs. Then it fell silent again. The two Sligs just kept in the light, not moving a muscle.
