The whole "written for a younger audience" defense sort of peters out when you realize
Harry Potter was written for the same age group and still has ten times the substance
Twilight does.
It's like a case of
The Missing Piece or
The Giving Tree versus
David Likes Rain. The former two teach complex life lessons dealing with avorice, humility, and companionship wrapped neatly in a juicy metaphor.
David Likes Rain is about David and the rain, and how he likes it.
