Climbing it is incredibly insulting to the Aboriginal people who revere the rock as a sacred artifact. Aside from them discouraging you from climbing it simply because you're a nice person and don't want to offend them, they say that the result of you climbing it is losing your soul. They're more than happy for you to visit it and appreciate the wonder of Uluru visually.
That said, I did climb Uluru when I was too young to know better. My resulting lack of soul may well explain a lot about me.
