Two reasons I think Communism never worked:
1) Corrupt leaders. The "great and mighty" leader claims everyone is equal as he sleeps on a bed of money and the people struggle to maintain decent living conditions.
2) No reason to try and excel. What's the point in doing something like developing a cure for cancer or improving a product if you get the same paycheck as a lazy person who slacks off and calls in sick at least one day every week.
As Lampion said, we don't care about each other enough to have any sort of existing equality.
