There. You're wrong. Only the last line is important. It's not stated if the narrator, or the group of people is meant. It just says how many went to St. Ives.
Therefor, the only logical answer is the one I gave:

It clearly does refer to "them", as it says "kits, cats, sacks, wives How many are going to St. Ives". As none of them are going there, the only logical answer is 0.
