the thing I don't like about pokemon is that you have to buy all the games to complete a poke-dex...... or have a friend who's willing to trade all of his pokemon that he cought for all of your's, which is... unlikely.

As far as I know, Pokemon had much more emphasis on the trading/social aspect in Japan whereas the American release focused on catching them all and being the best. It wasn't so much buying the games and trading with yourself than it was finding people who had Pokemon they were willing to trade. I also imagine it may've been easier to find Pokemon players in Japan, especially nowadays.
Nothing beats R/B/Y for me, I still have my copies (although I think Blue is broken). FireRed and LeafGreen were badass, though, great nostalgia. Emerald was OK, but I lost interest half-way through. Pearl is quite boring in many respects =\ too many things you can do makes each objective less fulfilling.
