My problem is that it's not right behind a mask, it's just an excuse for vandalism and it turns in the public eye from a 'Brave demonstration' or whatever to a lot of anonymous young hooligans spreading anarchy and chaos, leading to a public and media fueled backlash on the matter.

I believe you could be refering to the Scientology raids. They wear the masks for that because Scientologists are crazy bastards that will stalk you to no end if they find out who you are.
