Actually, I tried this. It only works if the bullets hit the slig.

Well, typically if you are using the Slig as a human shield... you're holding him in front of you so that the Sligs shoot him. If you're facing away, they will be shooting at you, and the Slig will not offer you any protection
BTW this only works if you have unlimited lives and sneak up on the Slig in order to pick him up. (Since when the Slig dies, the others will be shooting at you).
Still, it works nicely as a last resort.
