Actually it is possible to make JPEGs without much distortion. In photoshop for example, just set the accuracy/quality to 100%. Filesize will be a bit larger but it shouldn't have large artifacts in it or anything like that.

I get into the habit of using Microsoft Paint's atrocious JPEG save functionality that pretty much violates the original picture in every way.
