Raising money for these types of things counts on playing on people's emotions. Look at the starving kids in Africa fund, look at the 'save the celebrity' fund; you get played like a fiddle into "caring" when really all that's happening is that you're getting played into feeling guilty. It's a good business.
If one really cares about something it doesn't need a commercial or celebrity alignment to solicit emotion from one to "care" ("care" being used loosely because that's what they're trying to make you feel like you're doing.)
