We overwhelmingly value immediate gains over long-term prospects. This is a trait that is ubiquitous throughout the natural world, but we have the means to turn it into something monstrous. These would be the downsides of industrialism.
We never really get past our natural predispositions. More often, we simply take them too far and subvert the reason we have them. Human instinct is powerful, and dominates every aspect of our lives. The urges, desires and compulsions we feel every day- we do not wilfully choose to have or follow these, we just do. It's built in.
