I never had a RRoD, but instead it just failed one night when I brought it to a friend's birthday party. I tried everything I could think of that cost less than $30, and then sent it to a 3rd-party Xbox repair service, since
1. I've heard bad stories of Microsoft 'repairs'
2. My warranty had already expired.
It cost like $100, which, while being a lot, is better than buying a new one. It turns out that it had gotten just a bit too hot, blown out the fan, and had partially melted the video card. So they replaced the card and installed a new, stronger fan. It now sounds a little bit like a vacuum when I turn it on, but it works.
