Mythbusters tested for two full episodes with every possible scenario and a bullet will not cause a barrel of fuel to ignite, let alone explode. They shot an entire car with a filled up gastank to shit with just about every kind of small arms ammo you can think off and nothing happened. In true mythbuster tradition they did blow the car up eventually, but that took a lot more then just gas and a bullet
