I also usually imagine the characters first and imagine a story for them later
I like the anime-like style you have chosen for him
I especially like the lower sketch, where he is half with the back to the viewer
(geez my english xD but I hope you understand me though x) ...)
one question: do you make a preparatory drawing before? I do, sometimes... but often I just doodle around xD
