Odd. I don't know how the PSX version works but, assuming that it's similar to the PC, you can press any of the four directions to throw the grenade. Press the grenade button, count to four, then press the right button to throw as far as possible. The grenade will blow up in midair and blow up the drone.
You may find that it blows up too early or too late, in which case you just need to adjust the amount of time that you hold the grenade before throwing. Listen and count the number of beeps the grenade makes and adjust accordingly.
