I doubt a scientific explanation is really appropriate but I seem to remember the explanation being multiple meteor strikes whose craters coincidentally overlapped and formed the shape.

Mine wasn't an explanation for the mark on Abe's Moon, but for the dark patches on
our moon, and quite probably the dark patches on some of Oddworld's moons as well. The mark on Abe's Moon was made of craters, and that moon is not Abe's Moon.
