It's supposed to be a fault in machinery. Nothing has been manually turned on.

If the machines aren't turned on there's no possibility of any smoke or explosion unless they are, or someone was sat there with a blowtorch at it or something, neither of which is the case. Bear in mind the machines would
only be smoking if they were on and faulty or burning, considering that otherwise throughout the whole of W@RF no other characters have had a problem with smoke hindering their vision from the machines when they're operating normally.
