You're right - Nintendo does seem to be making an effort to get the older market it lost with N64, but they're still making some really idiotic decisions with the new console.
Like proprietary media - again...Didn't they learn the huge downsides that cartridges had over CDs with the 64? That 1.4gb will fill really quickly once texture map files increase and FMV is viewed in DVD quality with added sound quality.
I'll believe that the Gamecube is more than a kiddie console when it physically appears and shows some proper games...but it does seem technological potential.
