Certainly it makes no sense to have an unknown character from an un-nominated film present an award.

Maybe I'd got that mixed up with someone else then, but I know that Abe certainly wasn't unknown. I'm not sure about in the States but here in the UK, everybody knew who Abe was. He had a shortlived fame but people still knew who he was.
