think of it as humans and their supposed "races" (Race is an incorrect word, human is a race, hence the term "human race", so a "white" and "black" man are the same race).

No, race is the right word. It's used the same way as "varieties" are in, say, plants. We're certainly no less different from each other than the subspecies of tigers. It is an interesting juxtaposition, where science has stepped back for our own good.
