Why are you less likely to know what ‘goes in’ your beef if it comes from a different EU country? The real incentive to eat locally produced food is to reduce food miles, but then New Zealand dairy farming is so energy efficiency it still has a lower carbon footprint if it’s shipped to the U.K. than local dairy does.

But then if you’re drinking the milk of a different species after infancy, sustainable food production clearly isn’t your primary concern.

Sorry to take off like that.
im not quite sure what you meant in the last bit, about drinking milk from a different species after infancy, but for the first bit i meant if we become dependant on other countries for something quite important, we are no longer self sufficient in that sector of the farming industry, which will also mean plenty of lost jobs (no need to have dairy farms in England if we import cheap milk from...where ever). which i know isnt very important unless we're gonna start a war with anyone in the EU soon (which we are obviously not), but it does still mean we're not guarenteed ('whats gone in it' was a bad way for me to put it) the same handling precautions and livestock laws (not to mention the 5 'freedoms' for farm animals that anyone with a concsience will want to see done. if i remember rightly; freedom from pain, freedom from stress, freedom to space, freedom to eat and drink whenever, and freedom to shelter. there is more but less important) as we have in Britain.

plus DEFRA would blow their top if they didnt have total control of all farming issue's in the UK, already strained under the pressure of the recent 'foot & mouth' out break (AGAIN!) thanks to the bloody government (who were also responsible for the 'mad cow' disease out break a few years ago, because they weren't cooking the bone meal at a high enough temperature to kill all bugs, and the bone meal was then fed to cattle all over the country...i mean what a stupid mistake! there the british government for christ sake! and yet they didnt even cook cattle feed at the right temp!!), and our cattle movement restrictions have only just been lifted, to find that a government lab is pissing about with the 'foot & mouth' virus AGAIN, and nearly let it escape!! AGAIN!!! that would of been the second 'foot & mouth' out break this year! if it had of escaped. the farming industry is not well in Britain, and it dont help that now-a-days every single part of England is owned to someone, but New Zealand has area's where its owned to noone!!

sorry to chew your ear off.
