That was the only guard you can get by without whistling or cheats that I know of.
Not all mudokons can be killed. Many secret levels put them up where they cannot be harmed, others require Shrykull to get access to them, but to get Shrykull you need to save other mudokons first.
Because of this, you only have to kill most of them to get the grenades (about 80).
