Yes, it’s unimpressive. You can do the same thing without selecting two player mode.

I could be wrong if but if memory serves me correctly, the 2 player mode wasn't the same as just changing who is playing.
You were both playing your own saves and I think it was sorta like a race to see who can get to the end first or save the most muds.
I played it a little bit with my brother when I first got it but it became clear that I was alot better then him so he gave up before we even escaped RF (Victory!)
As for the last Oddworld game I played it was MO simply because I just can't get enough of the cut scenes, there just awesome! Gameplay on the other hand I prefed AO/AE
