1) Have you ever heard about the theory of God as a clockmaker? It's very interesting. You should check it out.
2) It doesn't take religion to make people scared of death. The conviction of the afterlife is sometimes the greatest peace that a person can have. "Christians," in the truest sense of the word, aren't scared of death. They have unwavering faith in Heaven and unwavering faith (usually almost bordering on arrogance) in their own actions, so really, they have no reason to fear the hereafter.
You see, guys? It's not impossible to have a friendly religious debate on this forum.

1) I fathom their could indeed be a clockmaker though I don't think it
has to be God or at least God as he is perceived to be.
2) You got me wrong. I mean that people feared death and had no idea what lay on the other side. Thus they accepted religion with its promise of Heaven/eternal paradise.
I view all the holy books as a way to explain the unknown to questioning people.
"How does the sun rise and set? And how do we know it will always continue to do so?" A man might ask. To which a religious man might answer, "The mighty god Helios pulls the sun across the world each day upon his noble chariot. It is his duty given to him by Zeus leader of the gods."
