1) If God existed he wouldn't allow such horrible things to happen on Earth.
2) I believe that all religions were formed to explain the unexplainable. That and to clam people with fears. Such as fear of death.

1) Have you ever heard about the theory of God as a clockmaker? It's very interesting. You should check it out
here. Not to be confused with the theory of God as a
watchmaker, which has more to do with intelligent design.
2) It doesn't take religion to make people scared of death. The conviction of the afterlife is sometimes the greatest peace that a person can have. "Christians," in the truest sense of the word, aren't scared of death. They have unwavering faith in Heaven and unwavering faith (usually almost bordering on arrogance) in their own actions, so really, they have no reason to fear the hereafter.
Myself, I remain hopeful that there is some sort of afterlife, but my rational side won't let me commit to that idea nearly as much as the average Christian.
