Even as far back as 2001, there were opinions that the Elum trap doesn’t seem very Oddworldy, and I rather agree. Oddworld should limit its sci‐fi qualities.

Who's to say that they're meant for Scrabs with all of those Paramites and others running around? Obviously they aren't meant for Ratz, but these traps could've been meant for Paramites to run into them. Even in the video, the narrator says "that's a bear trap", but I don't ever remember hearing anything that said that they were meant for Scrabs.
