Well, one interpretation of genesis has Adam created as a hermaphrodite, then the female side removed later to create Eve.

Hebrew doesn't have genderless pronouns. The male version is used in any ambiguous situation; e.g. a group of 100 females would use the female 'they' pronoun but a group of 99 females and 1 male or a group of 100 people where you don't know the collective gender would use the male.
