Wasn't it just Abe's mouth that was stitched up? I must have been wrong.

In AO and AE (or at least AO), any slave caught talking would have been shot. They
all got their mouths sewn, so they couldn't talk, but of course they loosened enough over time enough for them to talk. After they were rescued, most of them got their stitches removed completely, but Abe kept his as a reminder of his past.
