I just thought it'd make more sense that the Vykkers allowed them to temporarily remove them while they eat & sleep. They wouldn't want all thier employees dying from starvation and/or sleep apnea. It'd also explain how the Intern's stitches stay tight, seeing as they're constantly being re-applied, while the Mudokons of Rupture Farms loosened in time.
