Somi nodded. "The boss here now, Arnie, is an alright guy. He doesn't let the sligs beat up the mudokons and stuff. Anyway, there are too many animals living here to get out, even with all the people working here, so unless Arnie decides to get a whole army to fight for him there's not really a problem. And he wouldn't do that unless he really had reason to, like if we started killing the employees."

Jim took a step back. "Y-you mean your a s-ah-a native?"
Jim has been born a slave in some pretty tough places, and throughout all of his life he'd been told that native mudokons were murderous savages who would kill anyone for any or even no reason. Though he was so totally scared of sligs at least it was a danger he knew; the mysteries and unseen terrors of what lurked outside the factory walls were perhaps the only things that scred him more than sligs.
Plus he'd only ever heard sligs call mudokons 'muds' before. He'd always taken it as an insult. His eyes flickered between the mudokon's painted face the club in his hand. His mind spun in circles, telling him he ought to give a proper reply and he stuttered out, almost pleadingly, "I-I just work here."
While it wasn't likely to stop the kind of person he imagined this mudokon to be from killing him, it was the best his panicked mind could come up with.
