On the contrary, I'd think it would be more likely for individuals trying to convince themselves that they saw a ghost, to imagine a perfect stranger. If they claim to have see someone related to them, who's been dead for awhile (especially if we're dealing with a relative they did not know very well, or at all), and are able to describe the person in detail, I feel that their claims suggest that they actually saw something rather than felt something.
