Microsoft has put in a lot of work to make Windows Vista good for games, including a high level of compatibility. I haven't heard anything specific about AO and AE, but they should be fine.

It would be smart for Microsoft to come out with their own hardware configs like Apple does, built for their systems.

They can't do that because they would lose the support of the hardware manufacturers that preinstall Windows on 100% of their PCs.
